# About ExemptBack Canonical: https://exemptback.com/about Reviewed: 2026-11-07 What ExemptBack is and is not, how our Texas homestead exemption guides are researched and fact-checked, and the primary sources we rely on. Reviewed November 7, 2026 · Law checked November 5, 2026 ## What ExemptBack is ExemptBack is private self-help software for Texas homeowners. The free check compares the facts you enter and your county appraisal record with Texas homestead exemption law and estimates back-year refunds and yearly savings. Owners who want help can buy an optional kit that prepares their filing packet, checklist, letters and refund tracker. You sign and file your own application. If your report shows you are already covered or the savings are small, it tells you not to buy anything. ## What ExemptBack is not - Not a government agency, and not affiliated with any appraisal district, tax office, or the Texas Comptroller. - Not a law firm, and not a substitute for an attorney’s advice. - Not a registered property tax consultant. We do not file for you, represent you, or protest on your behalf. - Not required. Filing with your appraisal district is free and you can do it yourself. ## How we research - **Primary sources first:** the Texas Tax Code, Comptroller forms and guidance, and each appraisal district’s own pages. News and community threads are used only to understand what homeowners ask, and are labeled as such. - **One source of truth:** every dollar amount on this site and in our datasets is read from the same law table the calculator uses, so pages cannot drift from the numbers in your report. - **Dated reviews:** each page shows when it was reviewed and when the law table was last verified. - **Corrections:** if you find an error, contact us using the details in the site footer and we will review it against the source.
